Job Summary

SME Careers is seeking a SQL Engineer for a fully remote, hourly paid contractor role. The engineer will review AI-generated SQL queries, database designs, and data-processing logic, and create reference solutions and explanations for complex data problems. The work includes checking accuracy, clarity, and prompt adherence; identifying problems in methodology, query structure, indexing strategy, or conceptual understanding; verifying data-related claims; explaining solutions step by step using sound methods; and comparing AI responses for correctness, performance, and reasoning quality.

The successful expert’s SQL and database-engineering knowledge will contribute to improving leading AI models used across industries.

Important

There is no immediate project for this role; however, qualified engineers may be among the first people contacted when relevant opportunities arise and can gain access to future projects through the expert network.

Key Responsibilities

• Create detailed prompts and responses across varied topics to support comprehensive AI learning.
• Evaluate and rank AI responses to improve accuracy, fluency, and contextual relevance.
• Test models for possible inaccuracies and bias, and validate reliability across use cases.

Your Profile

• A bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Mathematics, or a closely related technical field.
• At least 7 years of professional production SQL experience as a Database Engineer, SQL Developer, Data Engineer, or in a similar role.
• Expert SQL skills, including complex joins, window functions, aggregation strategies, and query-plan analysis.
• Demonstrated experience in database performance tuning, indexing strategy, and troubleshooting concurrency or locking issues.
• Hands-on experience designing relational data models, schemas, and star or snowflake data-warehouse structures.
• Strong experience with ETL and ELT processes and tools, and with large-scale data on modern cloud or on-premises platforms.
• At least C1 written and spoken English, with clear technical writing and the ability to follow detailed English-language guidelines.
• Comfort using version control, CI/CD practices, and collaborative workflows to manage database changes.
• AI data training, annotation, or evaluation of AI-generated technical material is a strong advantage.
• A highly detail-oriented, systematic, and methodical approach to reasoning quality and subtle data or query issues.
