Job Summary

SME Careers is seeking a PHP Engineer for a fully remote, hourly paid contractor role focused on AI data training. The engineer will review AI-generated PHP code, backend designs, and technical explanations, and will also produce reference implementations and step-by-step reasoning for complex engineering problems. The work includes judging solutions for correctness, clarity, security, performance, and prompt adherence; finding issues in application architecture, data modelling, API design, security, caching, and database use; checking technical facts; preparing clear model solutions; and comparing AI responses for correctness and reasoning quality.

Key Responsibilities

• Create detailed prompts across PHP and backend topics and write high-quality reference answers for AI training.
• Evaluate, rank, and give feedback on AI responses to improve correctness, security, readability, and contextual fit.
• Test AI output for inaccuracies, unsafe practices, and possible bias, and assess its reliability in real-world use cases.

Your Profile

• A bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
• At least 4 years of professional experience developing production backend systems in PHP.
• Expert knowledge of modern PHP 7.4/8.x+, including object-oriented programming, strict typing, namespaces, Composer, and common design patterns.
• Strong backend fundamentals covering HTTP, REST, authentication and authorization, sessions, caching, queues, and API design.
• Deep database experience with MySQL and/or PostgreSQL, including schema design, indexing, query optimisation, and transactions.
• Experience with at least one major PHP framework, such as Laravel or Symfony, and knowledge of dependency injection, middleware, and ORM trade-offs.
• Hands-on secure-coding knowledge, including OWASP Top 10 risks, input validation, SQL injection, XSS, CSRF, and secrets handling.
• Comfort with version control, CI/CD workflows, and automated testing through tools and methods such as PHPUnit, integration tests, and mocking.
• Minimum C1 written and spoken English, with the ability to explain technical material clearly and follow detailed English-language guidance.
• A highly systematic, detail-oriented approach to assessing reasoning and finding subtle defects in complex PHP and backend systems.
• Previous work in AI data training, annotation, or evaluation of AI-generated technical material is a strong advantage.
