Job Summary

SME Careers is seeking a Public Health Subject Matter Expert for an hourly, remote contractor role. The expert will review AI-generated public-health and population-health responses, create specialist content when needed, evaluate analytical reasoning and step-by-step problem-solving, and provide precise written feedback. The work includes checking accuracy, clarity, safety, and prompt adherence; identifying errors in epidemiological reasoning, study interpretation, surveillance logic, risk communication, and health-systems concepts; verifying public-health claims; producing model explanations that demonstrate sound reasoning; and comparing responses for correctness and reasoning quality.

Important

There is no immediate project for this role; however, qualified experts may be among the first people contacted when relevant opportunities arise and can gain access to future projects through the expert network.

Key Responsibilities

• Create detailed prompts and gold-standard answers across epidemiology, public-health practice, policy, prevention, and risk communication.
• Evaluate and rank AI responses to improve correctness, clarity, contextual relevance, and scientific rigour.
• Test outputs for inaccuracies, misleading evidence interpretation, unsafe recommendations, and bias, and validate reliability across populations and settings.

Your Profile

• A bachelor’s degree or higher in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Policy, Global Health, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience; an MPH is preferred.
• At least 5 years of professional public-health experience in government, the public sector, NGOs, academia, healthcare systems, global health, consulting, or a similar environment.
• Confidence in problem framing, causal reasoning, bias and confounding, risk stratification, and prioritisation.
• Strong understanding of population-level disease processes, prevention strategies, screening concepts, vaccination principles, and health-behaviour frameworks.
• Excellent attention to factual accuracy, unsafe assumptions, misleading causal claims, misuse of statistics, and inappropriate recommendations, with at least C1 English proficiency.
• Ability to assess denominators, rates versus risks, time horizons, surveillance definitions, uncertainty, and overall internal consistency.
• A reliable, self-directed approach and the ability to maintain consistent quality across time zones in an hourly remote-contractor workflow.
• AI data training or annotation, guideline work, systematic reviews, programme evaluation, policy analysis, or editorial quality assurance is strongly preferred.
