Job Summary

SME Careers is seeking a Scala Engineer for a fully remote, hourly paid contractor role. The work involves reviewing AI-generated Scala code, system designs, and technical explanations, as well as producing strong reference implementations and step-by-step reasoning for complex engineering problems. The engineer will assess outputs for correctness, clarity, safety, performance, and prompt adherence; detect problems involving concurrency, distributed-system behaviour, JVM performance, functional correctness, and resource handling; verify technical information; write clear explanations and model solutions that demonstrate sound methods; and rate and compare AI responses for correctness and reasoning quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create detailed prompts covering Scala and JVM topics and prepare high-quality reference answers that support AI learning.
  • Evaluate and rank AI responses to improve correctness, safety, performance, and contextual relevance.
  • Test AI output for inaccuracies, unsafe patterns, and bias, and validate reliability across real-world use cases.

Your Profile

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 4 years of professional experience building production systems with Scala, including backend services, data platforms, or distributed systems.
  • Expert-level skill in Scala 2.13+ and/or Scala 3, including the type system, implicits/givens, collections, and functional patterns.
  • Strong JVM fundamentals covering the memory model, garbage collection, profiling, performance tuning, and production troubleshooting.
  • Deep experience with concurrency and effect systems such as cats-effect or ZIO and/or actor-based systems such as Akka or Pekko.
  • Experience designing and operating services in distributed environments, including microservices, messaging/streaming, retries, idempotency, backpressure, and consistency trade-offs.
  • Strong testing practices with ScalaTest, MUnit, or property-based testing such as ScalaCheck, together with comfort using CI/CD workflows.
  • Comfort with build tooling and dependency management, including sbt and Maven/Gradle interoperability, plus version-control best practices.
  • At least C1 English proficiency in writing and speaking, with the ability to explain technical subjects clearly and follow detailed English-language guidelines.
  • Previous experience with AI data training, annotation, or evaluation of AI-generated technical content is a strong advantage.
  • A highly detail-oriented, systematic, and methodical approach to evaluating reasoning quality and finding subtle issues in Scala and JVM systems.
